Our shiny new website is live!

After several weeks of frustration, many hours of patiently (and impatiently) hanging on the phone and typing furiously into online chat boxes Colchester Wood turners is now live on it’s new host and is running on WordPress which should be a lot easier to update and add shiny new things to.

We did have a member gallery on the old site, unfortunately none of the images had any information attached and because of the limitations of Wix (our old host) I only have small images, so………

If members have any pictures of your work and would like to see them in a members gallery please send them in, include A title, who turned it and any other details you think are relevant (what day of the week, what the weather was like, how many cups of tea consumed are probably not that relevant whereas what timber, what lathe and particular finishes used are.)

If you could email them to me at silverhorde1@gmail.com I’d appreciate it.

I’d also appreciate any suggestions, critiques etc although you may not all get your wishes granted.

Regards,

Chris The Webmaster

We had the pleasure of a visit from Dave Stovell of https://www.stovelldesign.co.uk/ demonstrating some green woodturning, specifically how to create shrink pots.

Shrink pots are created by turning a small green log (section of branch) to remove some or all of the bark and then hollowing it out using incannel chisels and then using a small scorp cutting a groove at the base into which a seasoned disk of timber is inserted.

The reason for using green timber is that as the timber dries it then shrinks around the disc forming a tight seal. A lot of skill is needed to ensure both parts are just the right size to ensure a tight fit without splitting the wood.

The evening was enjoyed by all present and there were a lot of comments from people who were going to try it although they drew the line at painting their lathes pink (Dave did say that wasn’t essential)

I would recommend having a look at Dave’s website (click on any image)
